The more things change...

the more they stay the same. Jane may be practically grown up now, but she still loves to boogie.

Summer Highlights - Jane's Second Birthday!

A small gathering of friends and family helped Jane celebrate her second birthday (ahem, two months ago). She had a wonderful time.

To this day, when asked about her birthday, she extols the virtues of the cupcakes. She really enjoyed them.

Thanks to all who helped us celebrate!

Summer Highlights - September

Wow. We must really, really like that purple sweatshirt.

Playing in the backyard.

Fabulous clay-dough jewelry!

Playing her music class songs.

Baking cookies with Mommy. Yum!

Summer Highlights - more photos from Will's birth

No, not that kind!

Thanks, Corrie, for the great pictures.

Summer Highlights - July-August

Of course Will's birth was the highlight of July. Here's what else we were up to:

At the Fitzgerald's American Music Festival on July 4th.

Baby pool and sprinkler at the same time!!

Taking a break at the park. Henry, Carmin, and Becky spent a lot of time chasing around Jane this month. Thanks, guys!

Finger painting... even better outside!

Picnicking with Daddy at the Art Institute gardens.

Summer Highlights - April-June

Ok, so April isn't exactly summer, but we had some nice weather...

Working in the yard with Mommy.

Jane's new sandbox!

A pony ride from Becky with buddies Polly and Madeline.

Enjoying the backyard.

Summer Highlights - Visits with Family

As promised, a little catch-up blogging... a few photos of our summer fun before winter gets here!

We were fortunate to have lots of visits with family this summer:

Enjoying a pretty summer morning on the porch with Papa.

At the playground splash pool with Auntie Corrie. Corrie came to stay for a few weeks before Will arrived and while Mommy was in the hospital. She was a lifesaver, and Jane loved having all that time with her.

Grandma and Grandpa came to help out after Will was born. Here's Grandma with "two babies at once!" as Jane would say.

And of course Auntie ZaZa had to come meet her new nephew!

Thanks for coming to see us and help out!

Trick or Treat!

Jane got the full Halloween experience this year. Costume, face paint, trick or treating, and CANDY. She really, really wanted to be a "scary ghostie" and that is what she was. We went with the "let her have as much as she wants, it's Halloween" philosophy.

She quickly called our bluff.

Needless to say, she had a fantastic time. As I type this, she's in her crib hollering out to the trick or treaters each time the doorbell rings.

Happy Halloween!

Three Months Old!

Well, my darling little Will, Mommy has been slow to pick this up. What can I say, we've been busy! I can't believe how the first three months of your life have flown by. You are getting to be such a big boy. Really! At your two month visit, you were almost 15 pounds and over two feet long.

You're getting so big in other ways, too. You are strong and holding your head up really well these days. You like to sit up in your Bumpo chair and enjoy the view. You are such a cheerful little guy -- always smiling and treating us to little giggles. You are very social and interested in other people, too, which is something your sister was decidedly not at three months.

While Jane refused to be held by anyone else at this age, you are happy to be passed around. You are generally pretty tolerant. As long as you have a fresh diaper, you're not hungry, and you're not too tired, you're a happy little dude. I'm sure some of this has to do with being the second child -- we can't always immediately run at the slightest little squeak, and you deal. You're already sucking on your fingers and self soothing like a champ. You're a laid back little guy, and it's a joy to be your mommy.

Even more so because as of late, you've been getting good at the sleep thing. We're putting you down earlier, and you're rewarding us by often waking up just once between 8PM and 7AM. Good boy. You're also taking a pretty consistent morning nap, and cat napping in the afternoon. With both you and Janie to play with, that still doesn't leave a lot of time for other things like updating the baby blog. Thanks for giving me a few minutes to do it today.

I love you, my sweet little boy,
Mommy

Posting success!

I am happy to report Mom is finally getting around to fixing the photo posting issues we've been having. Please enjoy this shot of my cute little brother, and look forward to some catch-up posts. (If said little brother allows Mom the time, that is!)

Accordion Music

Jane's latest musical obsession is anything Cajun or Zydeco, preferably with an accordion (it's all accordion music (!!!) to her). She just can't sit still when it's on. Then again, who can?

Right Now

In one room...

This is Will's M.O. He'll be up soon to eat and then pass out again, no doubt. As much as we're looking forward to playing with him more, we'll take it while it lasts.

In another room... Jane has enthusiastically been performing her nap-time monologue for over an hour, all the while bouncing up and down in her crib. (In case you wondered where those calf muscles came from.) Topics covered include:
  • "Baby William is so cute! I want to get him out of his bassinet and play with him."
  • "We will have popsicles today. We will eat them!!"
  • A recitation of How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?
  • A narrative of her efforts to remove her pillowcase. "My pillowcase is too soft. I took it off!"
It's gotten ominously quiet in there now -- better go check it out.

Jane had managed to remove her diaper from underneath her shorts. She has really honed her nap-avoidance techniques lately!

Conceding Defeat

Daddy may have won the battle, but I don't consider the war over... not as long as we live on the north side of Chicago.

Oh, and please excuse the shameless bribery documented in the video.

A Family Resemblance

Does this little guy remind you of anyone?

Hint:

Though Will has Jane beat for adorable little old man and Yoda faces.

Welcome, Will!

After months of anticipation, our baby is here. William Robert was born at 1:53PM on Monday, July 19. He was 9 pounds, 11 ounces and 21 inches long.

We are just delighted with him.

We love you, Will!

22 Months Old!

Well. I haven't really kept up with your blog lately, darling. Forgive me. You're a whopping 22 months old now. Getting perilously close to two! Where has the time gone? Four months is an eternity in the life of an ever-changing toddler, so I'll attempt to do justice to all you've been up to.

You are such a beautiful, spirited, affectionate, fun little girl. You love to be outside playing in the garden or at the park. You run at full speed and fall down all the time, and you're learning to just pick yourself up and keep going. You're becoming more competent and independent all the time. It's really a thrill to watch you figure things out.

Lately we have been marveling at what a big girl you are becoming. You talk mostly in sentences, in a very conversational style. For instance, recently you told me, "I'm sleepy. I had a long day at the park today." You funny girl. You also use the potty somewhat regularly, and you help clean up and get ready for bed. Yesterday you actually brushed your teeth (as opposed to chewing on your toothbrush), filled your cup under the faucet, drank from it, and dumped the rest out. I nearly fell over.

We've been reading and talking a lot about being a big sister and bringing home baby brother, and you are really excited. Your new favorite books are the Hello Baby and Big Sister books, and you know all the safe toys for baby brother. You helped me sort through a box of infant toys for baby brother, and you only kept a few for yourself!

This will probably change in the next few months, but for now you share readily. I don't know why, but you've never gotten super possessive about your toys (or any other toys you happen to be playing with). You're usually pretty open to the suggestion of someone else having a turn, and you seem to enjoy watching your friends have fun with toys, too.

You are still an almost perpetually cheerful little girl. You don't like to get up in the morning -- you prefer to have us come keep you company while you wallow around in your crib for a little while. You like to ease into your day, and so do I. You often greet us with a sleepy but enthusiastic, "Can we read books?" This simple question is music to my ears.

Big changes are coming for us, my sweet little Jane. You already love your baby brother so much, and you will be a wonderful big sister. And I know that will make Daddy and I love you even more than we do now, if you can imagine that.

Love,
Mommy
